Important Documents 1916 Proclaimation of Independence Constitution of Dáil Éireann (21 January 1919 and amended in April 1919) Declaration of Irish Independence by Dail Eireann 1919 Message for the Free Nations of the World by Dail Eireann 1919 Democratic Programme of Dail Eireann 1919 The Minutes of Proceedings of the First Dail of the Republic of Ireland, 1919-1921 (Official Record) Constitution of Dáil Éireann (25 August 1921) This amended the existing Constitution of 1919. Ireland was a declared a Republic in January 1919 and was a 32 county Republic from 1919 - 1922. It's parliament was called Dail Eireann and was based in Dublin city, Ireland. The Republic fought a War of Independence against Britain during this time from 1919 - 1921. In December 1921 an agreement was signed between representatives of Dail Eireann and the British government establishing an Irish Free State. This agreement was forced on the Irish government under threat of violence, further invasion, genocide and war by the British according to Michael Collins. his made the treaty illegal under British and international law. This Free State came into effect in January 1922 and consisted of 26 counties (out of 32 counties of Ireland) and was not a Republic and lasted from 1922 - 1949. The Free State had links to the British monarch who presumed himself to be head of state in Ireland and some Irish ports remained under British control until 1938. Due to foreign royal involvement during this time, the Dail of the Free State has been mockingly and scornfully referred to as the "royal Dail" or "royal Oireachtas". In 1936 the British monarch and his representative in Ireland were abolished and removed as head of state in Ireland. The role of head of state has been fulfilled by a President of Ireland elected by the people of Ireland since 1938. In 1948, the Republic of Ireland Act was passed and Ireland became a Republic again in 1949 and has functioned as a Republic up to the present. In 1998 the Good Friday Agreement was offically signed and agreed by the governments of the Irish Republic and Britain and passed into law by Referendums in the Irish Republic and in Northern Ireland. This agreement made provision for a devovled government and powers in Northern Ireland, reform of the police, protection of human rights and civil rights there and for a future Referendum in Northern Ireland to decide on uniting the 6 counties of Northern Ireland with the 26 counties of the Irish Republic to form a 32 county Irish Republic. This will finally establish total Irish independence in the future. The original Irish Republic was 32 counties between 1919 - 1922 and its Dail Eireann represented the 32 counties of Ireland.
